Ms Reshma Prasad, Transgender Activist, threw lights on topic ‘Transgender Protection Act’

On 31 st March, 2023, Department of Sociology, Patna Women’s College, Autonomous, in collaboration with ‘WE’ PWC Gender Cell organised a Guest Lecture on the topic ‘Transgender Protection Act’ on the occasion of International Transgender day of Visibility at Open-Air Stage Hall on 31 st
Transgender Day of Visibility is an international event on March 31 st dedicated to recognize the resilience and accomplishments of the transgender community. The programme started with a welcoming of the Eminent Guest by giving a sapling as a token of gratitude ‘Nukkad Natak’ by St. Xavier’s School of Management in which they depicted the struggles of transgenders throughout their life, directed by Mr. Ajay,Coordinator, Theatre Club, St. Xavier’s School of Management, Patna. Thereafter, The Resource Person, Ms Reshma Prasad, Transgender Activist, through a
PowerPoint Presentation threw lights on topic ‘Transgender Protection Act’. She said that “Every fourth person in a thousand identify themselves differently.” She also enlightened the arena with Transgender Protection Right Act. Later she emphasized about the steps taken by the Government of India towards the protection of transgender community by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. But in spite of this it is
the responsibility of the society more than the government and also to create a positive
environment and accept the transgender and gender nonconforming children to live with
their dignity in society. The Guest Lecture was followed up by an interactive session and
a myth bursting session.


Then, Dr. Tapashi Bhattacharjee, Head, Department of Sociology thanked the Esteemed
Guest in her address and said that every year, socio we celebrate International
Transgender day of Visibility to dedicate and to celebrate the transgender people and
for raising awareness of discrimination faced by them worldwide, as well as a
celebration of their contributions to society.
The organisers of the programme were Dr. Tapashi Bhattacharjee, Member, ‘WE’ PWC
Gender Cell and Head Department of Sociology, Miss Samiksha Sinha, Member
Secretary ‘WE’ PWC Gender Cell and Assistant Professor , Department of Sociology
Sister Jincy A.C., Member ‘WE’ PWC Gender Cell and Assistant Professor, Department
of Sociology. The Faculty of Department of Sociology Dr. Ragini Ranjan, Assistant
Professor, Department of Sociology, Dr. Juhi Singh, Assistant Professor, Miss Samiksha
Sinha, Assistant Professor, Dr. Chinmayee Mohanty, Assistant Professor, were also
present.


Special Guest were Devopriya Dutta , Environmentalist ,Tarumitra and Alumni of
Department of Sociology and Ratna Purkayastha, Social Worker.
Post session, Department of Sociology celebrated International Transgender day of
Visibility with a small cake cutting celebration with Puja Sharma Rekha, Transgender
Activist.
The programme was moderated by Aaisha Raza, Cultural Secretary, Student Council
2022-23.
