In a vibrant celebration of cinema’s transformative power, the Department of Mass Communication at Patna Women’s College, in collaboration with its Media Club, organized a special screening of the critically acclaimed film “Sitaare Zameen Par” on Saturday. The event took place in the iconic Veronica Auditorium and proved to be a significant occasion, drawing an enthusiastic audience of over 2,000, including students, faculty, and esteemed guests.
The screening sought to leverage the power of storytelling to inspire dialogue around empathy, inclusivity, and the pivotal role of education in social change. The audience was visibly moved by the film’s narrative, which delves deep into the challenges and triumphs of children with learning disabilities. The story’s resonance was reflected in the high level of engagement and thoughtful discussions it sparked among attendees.
Setting the stage for the evening, Ms. Roma, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, underscored cinema’s ability to educate and foster empathy. In her welcome address, she highlighted how films such as “Sitaare Zameen Par” can serve as catalysts for societal improvement, sparking both awareness and action. “Cinema is not only a mode of entertainment but an effective tool for education and social reform. It makes us see, feel, and think beyond our immediate environments,” Ms. Roma noted.
Adding academic depth to the event, Dr. Aparajita Pathak, Assistant Professor, Mass Communication, delivered a nuanced analysis of the film’s theoretical and societal relevance. She emphasized the critical need for sensitivity toward individuals with disabilities, urging for more inclusive narratives both in media and in classroom settings. Dr. Pathak also expressed her gratitude to Mr. Prashant Ravi, Coordinator of the Media Club, whose initiative and coordination played a pivotal role in bringing the event to fruition.
The evening was further enriched by the presence of prominent film critic and filmmaker Mr. Prashant Ranjan, and senior journalist Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, who attended as distinguished experts. She stressed the importance of inclusivity, particularly for individuals with disabilities and special needs. Dr. Sinha called for a collective effort to create environments—academic and otherwise—that celebrate diversity and champion the cause of equal opportunities for all.
