Bihar Cabinet Expansion: Seven BJP Leaders Inducted Ahead of Elections

Patna, February 2025 – With Bihar set to go to polls later this year and the state budget session just two days away, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expanded his cabinet. This long-anticipated move saw the induction of seven new ministers, all from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while no members from Janata Dal (United) [JDU] or other alliance partners were included.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Raj Bhavan, where the new ministers took their oaths in the presence of senior officials and political leaders.

  1. Sanjay Saraogi – The first to take the oath, Sanjay Saraogi is a BJP MLA from Darbhanga. A legislator since 2005, he took his oath in Maithili, reflecting his strong regional roots.
  2. Sunil Kumar – The MLA from Biharsharif, Sunil Kumar, belongs to the Kushwaha community. A former JDU legislator from 2005 to 2010, he joined the BJP in 2013 and has since won the 2015 and 2020 elections on a BJP ticket. This is his first ministerial post.
  3. Jivesh Kumar – Another leader who took his oath in Maithili, Jivesh Kumar is the MLA from Jale and belongs to the Bhumihar community. He was previously a minister in the NDA government but was excluded from the cabinet when Nitish Kumar rejoined the NDA in 2024. His re-induction marks a political comeback.
  4. Raju Singh – The MLA from Sahebganj, Raju Singh, is from the Rajput community. He first won in 2005 on a Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) ticket before switching to JDU, winning in 2005 (October) and 2010. In 2020, he contested and won on a Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) ticket before joining the BJP. He has now secured a ministerial position.
  5. Motilal Prasad – Representing Riga in the Bihar Assembly, Motilal Prasad belongs to the Teli community. He was first elected as an MLA in 2010 and returned to the Assembly in 2020.
  6. Krishna Kumar Mantoo – The MLA from Amanour, Krishna Kumar Mantoo, is from the Kurmi community. He first won from Amanour in 2010 on a JDU ticket but later switched to the BJP, winning the 2020 election. This is his first ministerial post.
  7. Vijay Mandal – The MLA from Sikti, Vijay Mandal, was first elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2020. His inclusion in the cabinet comes just months before the upcoming Bihar elections.
