Cold Wave Advisory: Dos and Don’ts

Before the Cold Wave

  1. Stay Informed: Regularly check weather updates through media like radio, TV, or newspapers to anticipate cold wave conditions.
  2. Stock Essential Supplies: Ensure adequate winter clothing, food, water, fuel, batteries, chargers, emergency lights, and basic medicines.
  3. Insulate Your Home: Seal windows and doors to prevent cold air from entering.
  4. Health Precautions: Protect yourself against illnesses like flu and nasal congestion by taking precautions and consulting local health workers or doctors if needed.

During the Cold Wave

  1. Minimize Outdoor Activity: Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to cold winds and rain.
  2. Dress in Layers: Opt for loose-fitting, layered clothing with an outer windproof layer and inner woolen layers. Avoid tight clothing as it can restrict blood circulation.
  3. Stay Dry: Keep yourself dry and change wet clothes immediately to retain body warmth.
  4. Protect Extremities: Wear mittens, cover your head, neck, and face, and use waterproof shoes to prevent heat loss from the body.
  5. Consume Nutritious Food: Include Vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables in your diet to boost immunity. Regularly drink warm liquids to maintain body heat.
  6. Take Care of Vulnerable Groups: Pay special attention to the elderly, infants, children, and those living alone. Check on your neighbors, especially senior citizens.
  7. Use Heating Devices Safely: Use room heaters with proper ventilation. Avoid using coal indoors as it can emit carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas.

Signs of Frostbite and Hypothermia

  • Frostbite: Symptoms include numbness, pale or yellowish fingers, toes, or nose, and hardened skin. Severe cases can lead to gangrene. Seek medical attention immediately.
  • Hypothermia: Warning signs include shivering, slurred speech, drowsiness, muscle stiffness, and difficulty breathing. This is a life-threatening condition requiring urgent medical care.

Immediate Actions

  • Move affected individuals to a warm location and replace wet clothes with dry ones.
  • Warm the body using skin-to-skin contact or blankets. Avoid direct exposure to intense heat.
  • Provide warm beverages (avoid alcohol).

For Farmers

Cold waves can damage crops, reduce germination rates, and affect flowering and yields. Farmers are advised to:

  1. Spray Bordeaux mixture or copper oxychloride to prevent infections caused by frost.
  2. Use phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to aid root growth and recovery post-cold wave.
  3. Employ sprinkler irrigation to generate heat and protect crops from frost damage.
  4. Cover soil near plant roots with black or shiny plastic sheets to retain heat.

For Livestock

Cold weather increases livestock energy requirements. Take the following measures:

  1. Cover animal shelters from all sides to protect against cold winds.
  2. Provide blankets or straw for animals to rest on.
  3. Feed high-quality fodder and increase the nutritional content of their diet.
  4. Keep animals in dry and warm areas, particularly during the night.

District Administration’s Appeal

The administration has called on the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against the cold wave. They also emphasized the importance of community support, encouraging citizens to look out for those who may need help during these harsh weather conditions.

As temperatures continue to drop, these measures aim to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as the poor, elderly, and children. The administration’s proactive efforts, including blanket distribution and advisory issuance, highlight their commitment to minimizing the impact of the cold wave on the community.
