New Delhi: YouTube has appointed Gunjan Soni as the new Country Managing Director for India, marking a significant leadership shift in the platform’s largest user base market. With nearly 500 million users, India represents YouTube’s most critical market globally. Soni’s appointment comes at a pivotal time, following the departure of former YouTube India Managing Director Ishan Chatterjee, who has now joined JioStar in a new role.
Gunjan Soni joins a growing list of women leading major tech companies in India. In December 2024, Preeti Lobana was appointed as Country Manager and Vice President of Google India, while Sandhya Devanathan currently serves as Vice President at Meta India.
Before joining YouTube, Soni served as the CEO of Zalora Group, an online fashion e-commerce company based in Singapore, for six years. During her tenure, she introduced new product categories and business models, and enhanced user experience through personalization and loyalty programs. She has also been a partner at McKinsey & Company, where she specialized in consumer and marketing practices.
Commenting on the appointment, Gautam Anand, Vice President of YouTube APAC, said:
“Gunjan Soni’s deep understanding of the creator economy and the evolving video commerce landscape in India will help YouTube reach new heights. Her leadership will accelerate creator growth, unlock new opportunities, and further strengthen YouTube’s role in India’s digital journey.”
On her new role, Gunjan Soni said:
“It is truly inspiring to see how YouTube is empowering creators and connecting communities across India. I’m excited to build on this strong foundation, drive innovation, and unlock new storytelling opportunities for creators. I also look forward to helping them reach global audiences and supporting all of YouTube’s partners in India.”
Soni’s appointment is expected to play a crucial role in YouTube’s future strategies, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and video commerce, areas where the platform is intensifying its focus in India.
