According to the official 2026 trading holiday calendars released by both NSE and BSE, January 1 is not designated as a market holiday. For Indian equity investors, this means normal trading activities — including pre-market and regular sessions — are expected to proceed as on any typical weekday.

This trading status is a departure from many foreign markets. Major exchanges in the United States, Europe, and Asia — including in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK, and others — traditionally observe January 1 as a public holiday and will remain closed for trading on New Year’s Day.

It’s worth noting that commodity markets in India, such as the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) and National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), may operate on a partial holiday schedule, typically open in the morning session and closed later in the day.
