New Delhi – December 31, 2025
As investors and traders around the world prepare to welcome the New Year, there’s an important update for India’s financial markets: the country’s major stock exchanges — the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) — will remain open for trading on Thursday, January 1, 2026. This comes even as most global markets shut for New Year’s Day.
According to the official 2026 trading holiday calendars released by both NSE and BSE, January 1 is not designated as a market holiday. For Indian equity investors, this means normal trading activities — including pre-market and regular sessions — are expected to proceed as on any typical weekday.

The typical trading hours for the NSE and BSE generally run from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time (IST), with pre-open sessions commencing earlier in the morning. Brokers and trading platforms will provide specific session times for different segments of the market.
This trading status is a departure from many foreign markets. Major exchanges in the United States, Europe, and Asia — including in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK, and others — traditionally observe January 1 as a public holiday and will remain closed for trading on New Year’s Day.
It’s worth noting that commodity markets in India, such as the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) and National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), may operate on a partial holiday schedule, typically open in the morning session and closed later in the day. This pattern reflects how specific market segments accommodate holidays while still providing some trading access.
For investors planning their year-end and New Year trading strategies, this means opportunities to engage with Indian equities right at the start of 2026, while keeping in mind that banking services and global markets may be unavailable due to holiday closures.
Stay tuned to exchange announcements and your broker’s updates for any last-minute changes to market timings and sessions.
