Patna, Bihar – A major aviation accident was narrowly avoided at Patna Airport on Thursday evening when an Indigo flight from Pune encountered a laser light attack during its final descent. The incident, which involved flight 6E-653, caused momentary disorientation for the pilot, raising serious concerns over flight safety and public negligence.
According to sources, the flight was preparing to land at the Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna when a strong beam of laser light, allegedly from a DJ setup, struck the cockpit. The beam temporarily affected the pilot’s vision, leading to instability in the aircraft’s control. However, owing to the pilot’s presence of mind and quick response, the aircraft was successfully brought down without incident, avoiding what could have been a catastrophic event.
Initial reports indicate that the laser light came from an unidentified source, possibly from a private event being held in the vicinity of the airport, specifically near the Phulwari Sharif area. Authorities believe that someone was using a high-powered laser device during a celebration, and the beam was directed unintentionally — or perhaps recklessly — towards the incoming aircraft.
The incident has triggered immediate investigation by the airport authorities as well as the local police from Phulwari Sharif police station. Officials have confirmed that the case is being treated with utmost seriousness, as any distraction to pilots during critical phases like landing or take-off can lead to disastrous consequences.
Airport security personnel have also been instructed to tighten surveillance in nearby areas, especially where public gatherings or DJ events take place, to prevent the recurrence of such hazardous situations. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed and may conduct an independent inquiry into the matter.
This isn’t the first time that laser lights have posed a threat to aircraft operations in India. Aviation experts have long warned against the use of high-powered lasers near airports, as they can blind or distract pilots, particularly during night operations.
Passengers on the flight remained unaware of the technical scare until after landing. Thanks to the pilot’s calm and professional handling, no injuries or damages were reported.
Authorities urge the public to act responsibly and avoid using laser equipment near flight paths, as it endangers not only those on board but also people on the ground.
