Massive Gathering at Gandhi Maidan for ‘Save Waqf, Save Constitution’ Conference; Opposition Parties Extend Support

Patna, June 29, 2025
A massive conference titled ‘Save Waqf, Save Constitution’ was held today at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan, drawing an unprecedented crowd from across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Organized under the leadership of Imarat-e-Shariah, the event saw participation from numerous Muslim social and civil society organizations. The protest was centered around the opposition to the proposed Waqf Bill, which participants have termed as “unconstitutional” and a direct threat to minority rights.

The conference also witnessed the support of key opposition political parties, including the Indian National Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and other constituents of the INDIA alliance, who had sent representatives to stand in solidarity with the protesters. Their participation added political weight to the gathering and highlighted growing opposition to the bill at both social and political levels.

The scale of the gathering was extraordinary, with thousands of vehicles entering the city, resulting in packed roads and a sea of people covering Gandhi Maidan. District administration, anticipating the massive turnout, had made tight security arrangements. A large contingent of police personnel and magistrates were deployed at the venue to ensure order and manage the crowd efficiently.

Protesters at the conference raised strong slogans like ‘Waqf Bachao, Dastoor Bachao’ (Save Waqf, Save the Constitution) and carried placards denouncing the bill as anti-constitutional. Speakers at the event emphasized that the bill, if passed, would violate the fundamental rights of religious and charitable trusts, and could pave the way for centralized control over Waqf properties, which are currently managed by the community.

Community leaders and speakers urged the government to withdraw the bill and respect constitutional values. They emphasized that this was not just a religious or minority issue but a matter of safeguarding democratic principles and cultural autonomy.

The peaceful yet powerful demonstration marks one of the largest public mobilizations in recent times against the proposed legislation. With growing political support and widespread participation, the ‘Save Waqf, Save Constitution’ campaign has become a significant voice of dissent that the government may find increasingly difficult to ignore.
