On the 16th of January 2024, the Department of English and Tark Debating Society, Patna
Women’s College (Autonomous) celebrated ‘Civil Rights Day’ at Carmel Hall, Patna
Women’s College (Autonomous). Civil Rights Day, or Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is an
annual observance marked on the third Monday in January as it celebrates the movement that
was started by Martin Luther King Jr, a man who dared to dream of a world free from the
shackles of racism and inequality in the United States of America.
On this occasion, Dr Richa, Assistant Professor, Department of English at Patna College,
delivered a lecture on the topic “Self Imaging: The ‘Civil’ in Civil Rights Movements. She
talked about the important figures related to the Black American Civil Rights movement and
discussed various steps to be taken to stand for civil rights. Instead of Re-presentation, she
emphasised Self-presentation and individual narratives. We need to understand that the fight
to right is a constant process.She also connected Civil Rights with Feminism as well.
Dr Sahar Rahman, Head & Associate professor, Department of English, Patna Women’s
College, Dr Shahla Rehana, Former Head, Associate professor, Department of English, Patna
Women’s College and coordinator of Tark Debating Society, Patna Women’s College and all
the faculty members of Department of English and Ms. Divya Gautam, Assistant Professor,
Mass Communication, Patna Women’s College were present along with the students of
Department of English and the members of Tark Debating Society. The programmme was
coordinated by Dr Shahla Rehana, Coordinator, Tark Debating Society and Dr Prabhat Jha,
Assistant Professor, Department of English, Patna Women’s College. Ms. Lowrin Azad, a
student of MA Final Year, Department of English, Patna Women’s College moderated the
session.
