Police Use Water Cannons and Lathicharge on Protestors(BPSC aspirants) Marching Towards CM’s Residence in Patna

Patna: Chaos erupted at JP Golambar in Patna as BPSC aspirants, demanding the cancellation of the 70th preliminary examination, clashed with the police while marching towards the Chief Minister’s residence. The protest, which started as a peaceful demonstration, escalated when the protestors refused to stop despite repeated warnings. The police first used water cannons to disperse the crowd, but when that failed, they resorted to a lathicharge.

The protest was organized to highlight alleged irregularities in the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination, including demands for a re-exam. Prashant Kishor, founder of the “Jan Suraaj” movement, had joined the protest earlier in the day, standing in solidarity with the students. However, as the situation turned violent, Kishor reportedly left the scene. This move drew mixed reactions, with some accusing him of abandoning the students at a critical moment.

A Day of Escalation

The day began with students gathering at Gandhi Maidan under Mahatma Gandhi’s statue for a sit-in protest. Patna SDM Gaurav Kumar attempted to reason with the protestors, pointing out that the demonstration lacked official permission. Despite this, the protestors, joined by Prashant Kishor, decided to march towards the Dak Bungalow area and then to the Chief Minister’s residence.

By 4:30 PM, the march reached JP Golambar, where the district administration had deployed heavy security to block their path. Officials, including the SDM and Patna City SP Sweety Sahrawat, urged the protestors to hold discussions with the Chief Secretary instead of escalating the situation. Prashant Kishor also appealed to the students to consider the dialogue option. However, the students insisted on meeting the Chief Minister directly, rejecting any alternative.

Police Intervention

As tensions rose, protestors began breaking barricades, prompting the police to act. Initially, water cannons were deployed to disperse the crowd. When the protestors continued their march, a lathicharge was ordered around 8 PM. Several protestors were injured, and many were detained during the crackdown. Ambulances were seen rushing the injured to nearby hospitals.

Reports of Prashant Kishor being arrested also surfaced briefly, adding to the confusion. However, the district administration quickly dismissed these rumors, confirming that Kishor had not been taken into custody.

Kishor’s Role in the Protest

Earlier in the day, Kishor played a significant role in arranging a meeting between the protestors and the Chief Secretary. A five-member student delegation was invited for discussions, but the protestors refused to engage, insisting on direct talks with the Chief Minister. This refusal led to a standoff, with Kishor eventually leaving the scene and returning to Gandhi Maidan to sit by the Gandhi statue.

However, by this time, the students at JP Golambar had grown frustrated and refused to listen to Kishor’s appeals. This marked a turning point in the protest, with the focus shifting entirely to the escalating confrontation with the police.

Disruption in the City

The protest caused significant disruption across Patna, with traffic snarls reported throughout the city. Key areas, including JP Golambar and Dak Bungalow, were virtually paralyzed for hours as protestors clashed with police and blocked roads.

Despite the tense situation, the district administration showed restraint for much of the day, avoiding the use of force until all other measures failed. Officials repeatedly tried to negotiate with the protestors, emphasizing the need for dialogue to address their grievances.

Aftermath

The situation remained tense late into the evening, with police clearing the area around JP Golambar after the lathicharge. Many protestors were taken into custody, while others regrouped at Gandhi Maidan to decide their next steps.

The students remain firm in their demand for the cancellation of the BPSC 70th preliminary examination and a re-exam. Meanwhile, Kishor’s involvement in the protest has drawn mixed reactions, with some accusing him of using the movement for political gains and others praising his efforts to mediate between the students and the administration.
