Abu Dhabi:
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has once again proven its strength and leadership in the global tourism sector. In 2024, the country achieved a historic hotel revenue of AED 45 billion, which is not only a major milestone but also a testament to the nation’s visionary strategy and the robustness of its tourism industry.
Federal Economy Minister and Chairman of the Emirates Tourism Council, Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, credited this achievement to the leadership of the country and their clear direction regarding tourism. He stated that tourism is not only helping to diversify the national economy but is also playing a crucial role in transforming it into an innovation- and knowledge-based economy.
In 2024, the UAE welcomed approximately 30.8 million hotel guests, which marks a 9.5% increase compared to the previous year. This figure represents 77% of the target set under the “National Tourism Strategy 2031” — achieved seven years ahead of schedule. The strategy aims to attract 40 million hotel guests by 2031. Minister Al Marri believes this target is well within reach, especially considering the growth in tourism investment, diversification, and increased participation of Emirati youth.
In 2024, a total of 16 new hotels were launched across the seven emirates, bringing the total number of hotels in the country to 1,251. The total number of hotel rooms reached 216,966, showing a 3% year-on-year growth. This growth is a sign of increasing investor confidence and the strength of the UAE tourism market.
The average hotel occupancy rate stood at 78%, placing the UAE among the top global tourist destinations. This confirms that the country’s diverse tourism offerings — such as luxury shopping, entertainment, cultural heritage, and adventure tourism — continue to appeal to a wide range of travelers.
In recent years, the UAE has launched several innovative tourism projects and strengthened global partnerships. Minister Al Marri stated that the next decade will be dedicated to making the UAE a “leading global tourism identity.” New attractions are being developed, leveraging the country’s unique geography and cultural features to offer fresh experiences.
The country’s tourism policy places a strong emphasis on diversification. Tourism is no longer limited to luxury travel — there is significant growth in eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and medical tourism. This is expanding the tourist base while also promoting environmental and cultural preservation.
Special importance is being given to increasing Emirati youth participation in the tourism sector. Multiple programs are being implemented to provide them with skills and training, enabling them to take on leadership roles and offer world-class yet local experiences to visitors.
Expansion of airports, modernization of transport systems, and development of world-class infrastructure at tourist sites are major contributors to the UAE’s success. Additionally, the country’s strategic geographical location makes it an important transit hub between the East and West.
The UAE presents a unique combination of cultural heritage and modern entertainment. Attractions like Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, luxury resorts, Abu Dhabi’s Louvre Museum, and the upcoming Guggenheim Museum provide exceptional experiences. International events like the Dubai Shopping Festival and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix also draw large numbers of tourists.
The UAE’s strong security system, strict regulations, and efficient administrative framework make it one of the safest destinations for tourists. This sense of safety encourages visitors to return again and again.
The UAE government is actively promoting smart and green tourism. Initiatives include smart city projects, adherence to green building standards in hotels, and promotion of eco-friendly activities.
Although the UAE has achieved remarkable milestones, challenges like regional competition, changing global travel trends, and the need for constant innovation still remain. Nonetheless, the government’s visionary policies, continued investment, and focus on quality are likely to keep the UAE on a path of success.
Hotel revenues of AED 45 billion and a high occupancy rate clearly demonstrate that the UAE’s tourism sector has secured a strong global position. Backed by innovation, sustainability, and quality experiences, the country is rapidly moving toward its ambitious 2031 goals and establishing itself as a global tourism powerhouse.
