Patna, December 2: The Bihar Assembly witnessed heated discussions and protests on the issue of smart meters, with opposition parties raising concerns about inflated electricity bills. Earlier in the day, opposition members staged demonstrations both inside and outside the Assembly, demanding answers from the government regarding alleged anomalies in smart meter functioning.
The opposition alleged that the installation of smart meters has led to unnecessary increases in electricity bills, causing widespread dissatisfaction among consumers. They accused the government of ignoring the financial burden placed on ordinary citizens and failing to address technical issues related to the meters.
Amid the uproar, opposition leaders demanded a clear explanation from the government on the mechanism of smart meters and measures being taken to ensure fair billing practices. “The people of Bihar are being forced to pay exorbitant electricity bills due to these smart meters. We need transparency and immediate corrective action,” an opposition leader said.
Responding to the allegations, government representatives defended the implementation of smart meters, claiming they are intended to improve billing accuracy and reduce electricity theft. They assured the House that grievances regarding billing will be thoroughly examined and resolved.
Despite the government’s response, the opposition continued its protest, seeking a more detailed discussion on the issue. The Speaker eventually intervened to restore order in the Assembly.
The controversy over smart meters has sparked a larger debate about their efficiency and the need for consumer-centric reforms in Bihar’s power distribution system. The issue remains a contentious topic, with the opposition vowing to escalate their protests until the government provides satisfactory answers
