His Holiness Pope Francis declared Lady of Divine Grace Shrine, Mokama, Bihar, as a Minor Basilica

In a momentous announcement, His Holiness Pope Francis declared Our Lady
of Divine Grace Shrine, Mokama, Bihar, as a Minor Basilica on 5 th April 2024
in Rome. On 24 th January 2025, the Shrine was officially declared as ‘Minor
Basilica’ by his Grace, Most Rev. Anil Thomas Couto, Archbishop of Delhi and
Secretary General of CCBI, in the presence of His Eminence Anthony Cardinal
Poola, Archbishop of Hyderabad and other Bishops, Priests, Religious, and
Christians from various parts of India during the Solemn Eucharistic
Celebration.
The title of Minor Basilica is reserved for churches of historical, architectural,
and spiritual significance and is a recognition of the shrine’s profound role in
the religious life of the region, further enhancing its importance as a place of
devotion for Catholics and people of goodwill from around the world. It is a
special honour given to a particular Church by the Holy Father. Mokama Shrine
was dedicted on 3 rd November 1947.
Our Lady of Divine Grace Shrine at Mokama has long been a beacon of faith
for a myriad of devotees. Pilgrims from across India and beyond visit the shrine
to seek solace, peace, and blessings through the intercession of the Blessed
Virgin Mary. With its deep spiritual roots and dedication to the Virgin Mary, the
shrine has become a place where people of all walks of life unite in prayer and
worship.
The shrine’s recognition as a Minor Basilica highlights its spiritual importance

His Grace Sebastian Kallupura, Archbishop of Patna Archdiocese, expressed
his joy and gratitude on behalf of the local church, stating, “This is a moment of
great joy for our Archdiocese and for all who have been touched by the grace of
Our Lady of Mokama. Our Lady of Divine Grace has long been a place of
solace, and this recognition will inspire even greater devotion. The title of
Minor Basilica is a testament to the deep faith of our community and the love
for the Virgin Mary that has flourished here for generations.”

Mokama- Pride of Bihar
This Minor Basilica is indeed a matter of pride to the State of Bihar as it stands
as the FIRST Minor Basilica in Bihar. It has it’s Spiritual, Architectural,
Archeological and historical significance. Therefore, it is another heritage site
in Bihar. Originally, Mokama was known as Mukam Amah. Mukam means a
resting place or home and Amah means mother. Thus it has become Home of
the Divine Mother.
