Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal Pledges 75% of Wealth for Education in India
Globally known as the “Metal King”, Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal has announced that he will donate 75% of his lifetime earnings towards educational initiatives in India.
The pledge, amounting to ₹21,000 crore in Indian currency, is the largest donation ever made by any Indian for a single cause. The announcement was made from London, where Agarwal currently resides, after consultations with his family.
Born on January 24, 1954, in Patna, Bihar, and a former student of Sir G.D. Patliputra High School, Agarwal expressed his vision to establish world-class universities in India — even larger than Oxford — operating on a “no profit, no loss” model. These institutions will focus on providing free, high-quality education to students across the country.
According to Agarwal, the initiative is aimed at creating large-scale educational projects that can transform India’s learning landscape and make higher education more accessible to all.
