Congress Leaders Pay Tribute to Bihar Kesari Shri Krishna Singh on 139th Birth Anniversary

PATNA, October 25, 2026: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh and Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar were felicitated during a programme organised in Patna on Sunday to mark the 139th birth anniversary of Dr. Shri Krishna Singh, popularly known as ‘Bihar Kesari’ and the first Chief Minister of Bihar.

The event was organised to remember Shri Krishna Singh’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle, Bihar’s development and social reform. Senior Congress leaders and party workers attended the programme to pay tribute to the veteran leader, whose political legacy remains an important part of the state’s history.

Born on October 21, 1887, Shri Krishna Singh emerged as a prominent freedom fighter and played an important role in the national movement against British rule. His commitment to the freedom struggle earned him the popular title ‘Bihar Kesari’.

After independence, Singh became one of the key architects of modern Bihar. He served as the state’s Chief Minister from 1946 until his death in January 1961, apart from his earlier tenure as Premier of Bihar under British rule. His leadership was associated with administrative reforms, industrial development and efforts to transform the state’s socioeconomic structure.One of his notable contributions was the abolition of the zamindari system, which sought to dismantle the traditional landlord-based agrarian structure. He also supported initiatives aimed at expanding social equality and improving opportunities for disadvantaged communities.

His role in challenging caste-based discrimination, including efforts to facilitate Dalit entry into the Deoghar temple, is remembered as a significant episode in Bihar’s social reform history.

The commemorative programme provided an opportunity for Congress leaders to honour Singh’s legacy and recall his role in shaping the political and developmental foundations of Bihar.

The participation of Mallikarjun Kharge, along with senior state leaders, highlighted the party’s effort to bring renewed public attention to the contributions and ideals of the former Chief Minister.

Shri Krishna Singh’s legacy continues to be remembered for his role in the freedom movement, institution-building, agrarian reforms and the development of modern Bihar.
