New Delhi/Patna: Nupur Nishith, a talented artist from Bihar, along with several other artists from the region, is now showcasing her painting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The President of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis, inaugurated the exhibition on July 8, 2024, highlighting the renowned Madhubani paintings of India and Nepal, also known as Mithila paintings. The official reception took place on July 11, 2024, attended by distinguished representatives from various countries.

Lok Bahadur Thapa, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, welcomed the audience and spoke about the rich tradition of Mithila culture. The exhibition, organized by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN, the Consulate General of Nepal in New York, and the Mithila Art and Culture Center/Festival of America, features works from artists from both India and Nepal. Among the notable artists are S.C. Suman, Nupur Nishith, Prateek, Shivangi Singh, Shailee Jha, Namrata Singh, Manisha Shah, and artists from the Janakpur Women’s Development Center.

The primary aim of this exhibition is to bridge the gap between traditional art and modern challenges, with a special focus on one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – climate change. Mithila painting, an ancient art form known for its intricate patterns and vibrant colors, is being used to convey messages about climate change and environmental conservation. These artworks emphasize the importance of preserving both cultural heritage and the planet, aligning with the UN’s broader goals of promoting global sustainable development.

Nupur Nishith, in particular, has garnered significant attention. She is the daughter of Vijay Prakash, a retired senior IAS officer and Chairman of Bihar Vidyapith, and Dr. Mridula Prakash, an esteemed educationist. Her participation in this prestigious exhibition is a moment of pride for Bihar, showcasing the region’s artistic talent on an international platform.
