The Patient, a resident of Nawada district, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Despite seeking treatment at various hospitals, his condition did not improve, and doctors advised amputation of his leg. Eventually, his family brought him to Mahavir Cancer Institute. After thorough examination, the hospital’s tumor board decided to perform surgery and replaced his entire femur (thigh bone) with an implant. As a result, the Patient’s leg was saved, and he is expected to be discharged soon and return to walking normally.

Dr. Surya Prakash, Senior Orthopedic Oncologist at Mahavir Cancer Institute, informed that the hospital has successfully treated around 80 bone cancer patients so far, preserving their limbs. Currently, a 16-year-old girl suffering from shoulder bone cancer is undergoing treatment, and her shoulder will also be saved through surgery.

Common symptoms of bone cancer include abnormal swelling, persistent pain, and bone deformity. Dr. Surya Prakash emphasized that ignoring these signs could lead to life-threatening conditions. Early consultation with a specialist is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment.

He further stated that bone cancer affects approximately 1 to 2 people per 100,000 annually in India. Although rare, it can become fatal if not diagnosed and treated in time. A dedicated cancer hospital with a team of musculoskeletal oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists is essential for managing such cases effectively.
