Patna, March 20, 2025 – Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar formally inaugurated the Sepak Takraw World Cup 2025 at the Pataliputra Sports Complex in Kankarbagh today. The grand event marks the first-ever hosting of this prestigious tournament in Bihar. The Chief Minister posed for a photograph with players and organizers in front of the Sepak Takraw World Cup banner, symbolizing the official commencement of the competition.
During the ceremony, CM Nitish Kumar interacted with the players, extended his best wishes, and greeted the audience with a wave. He personally visited the sports arena, congratulating the athletes and representatives from the participating nations.
This international tournament, being held in Bihar for the first time, will see over 300 players and coaches from 20 countries competing from March 20 to March 25 at the Pataliputra Sports Complex in Patna.
The event is a historic milestone for Bihar, placing the state on the global sports map. It not only elevates Bihar’s international sporting reputation but also fosters the growth of sports culture within the region. Local players will gain inspiration and firsthand experience of world-class competition and infrastructure.
Sepak Takraw, a traditional Southeast Asian sport, involves players using their feet, head, knees, and chest to hit a specially crafted rattan ball (Sepak). The game is often described as a fusion of football and volleyball, demanding exceptional flexibility, balance, and skill. It is immensely popular in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar. By hosting this global event, Bihar is set to establish a strong presence in the international sports arena.
As a mark of appreciation, International Sepak Takraw Federation (ISTAF) Secretary-General Datuk Abdul Halim Kadir presented a commemorative token to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The CM, in turn, honored Bihar’s Sepak Takraw player Bobby Kumar with a symbolic memento.
The event was attended by Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Principal Secretary to the CM Deepak Kumar, Director General of Police Vinay Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (General Administration & Sports) Dr. B. Rajendra, CM’s Secretary Kumar Ravi, CM’s Special Officer Gopal Singh, Bihar State Sports Authority Director-General Dr. Ravindran Shankaran, Sports Department Director Mahendra Kumar, ISTAF President Bun Chai Lor Piphath, ISTAF Secretary-General Datuk Abdul Halim Kadir, Sepak Takraw Federation of India President Yogendra Singh Dahiya, along with senior officials, trainers, and international players.
The Sepak Takraw World Cup 2025 is set to showcase thrilling competition while promoting Bihar as a rising hub for global sporting events.
