Patna, January 22, 2025: Former Mokama MLA and well-known strongman Anant Singh, also called “Chhote Sarkar,” narrowly escaped a deadly attack on Wednesday evening. The incident, which saw a barrage of 60 to 70 rounds of gunfire, has been linked to the notorious Sonu-Monu gang. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the assault.
The attack occurred while Anant Singh was on a tour of his constituency and visiting Hemja village to address grievances raised by locals. Reports suggest that the Sonu-Monu gang had earlier attacked a family in the same village. The gang reportedly assaulted the family members, evicted them from their home, and locked their house.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Anant Singh rushed to the village to intervene and hold the perpetrators accountable. However, as he reached the house associated with the gang, gunfire erupted. The attackers, identified as Sonu and Monu, opened fire as soon as Singh and his team arrived on the scene.
Amid the gunfire, Singh emerged unscathed. His security team quickly ensured his safety while retaliating cautiously. The tense standoff ended when the attackers fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of chaos and unanswered questions.
The situation has sent shockwaves across the region, with the violent display of hostility being condemned by leaders and citizens alike. The brazenness of the attack has raised concerns over the law-and-order situation in the area and the unchecked activities of criminal gangs.
The Sonu-Monu gang is notorious in the Mokama region for its involvement in extortion, violence, and land disputes. Their stronghold in certain pockets of the constituency has made them a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies.
The gang’s motive behind targeting Singh appears to be his growing influence among locals and his attempts to address the grievances of victims affected by their activities. Wednesday’s attack was allegedly triggered by Singh’s intervention in the gang’s recent assault on the family in Hemja village.
According to local sources, the gang has been active in terrorizing residents, and this latest incident has only heightened the climate of fear.
The Bihar Police have launched an investigation into the attack, with efforts underway to locate and apprehend Sonu and Monu. Senior police officials have assured the public of swift action, stating that such incidents will not be tolerated.
Speaking to the media, a senior police officer said, “We are taking this matter very seriously. The culprits will be arrested, and strict action will be taken against them. Security in the area has been increased to prevent further incidents.”
Police teams have been dispatched to conduct raids and gather evidence, and several suspects are being questioned in connection with the case.
Anant Singh, known for his larger-than-life persona and firm grip on the Mokama region, has survived multiple controversies and challenges over the years. This latest incident has only added to his image as a strongman who refuses to back down in the face of adversity.
Speaking to reporters after the attack, Singh said, “I will continue to stand with the people of Mokama and fight against injustice. Such cowardly attacks will not deter me. I trust the police to take action against the perpetrators.”
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders and citizens. Supporters of Anant Singh have expressed outrage over the incident, calling for immediate action to bring the culprits to justice.
Residents of Hemja village have also voiced concerns about their safety, urging authorities to crack down on criminal elements operating in the area.
The attack on a high-profile figure like Anant Singh underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tackling organized crime in Bihar. The state has long grappled with issues of gang violence and political rivalries, and incidents like this highlight the urgent need for comprehensive reforms.
This latest attack could serve as a litmus test for the administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order. As pressure mounts to bring the attackers to justice, all eyes are now on the police and government to ensure swift and decisive action.
The attempted assassination of Anant Singh has exposed the volatile dynamics of the Mokama region, where power struggles and criminal activities often intersect. While Singh has emerged unscathed, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who stand up against criminal elements.
As the investigation unfolds, the people of Mokama and Bihar at large hope for justice and a renewed focus on creating a safer environment for all. For now, the attack has left an indelible mark on the region’s political and social landscape, sparking debates on the urgent need for stronger measures to combat crime.
