Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own nervous system. It is often triggered by viral infections such as flu or diarrhea. This can cause swelling in the nerves, leading to muscle weakness and even paralysis.

Pune district in Maharashtra is the worst affected area. So far, 183 cases of GBS have been reported in the state. There are 28 suspected cases under investigation. Among the 11 deaths, 7 are suspected to be due to GBS, while 4 cases have been confirmed.

The cases in different areas of Pune are as follows:

  • Pune Municipal Corporation: 42 cases
  • Pimpri-Chinchwad: 32 cases
  • Pune rural areas: 33 cases
  • Other districts: Several cases reported

According to the Health Department, 144 patients have recovered and have been discharged from the hospital. However, 36 patients are still in intensive care, and 16 of them need ventilators to breathe.

Government Assures No Need to Panic

Maharashtra’s Health Minister, Prakash Abitkar, has asked people not to panic. He clarified that GBS is not like COVID-19 and does not spread from person to person. Most of the patients are recovering well with treatment. The minister also warned people against believing in false information spreading on social media. He assured that the government is taking all necessary steps to control the situation.

Strict Action by the Maharashtra Government

The Maharashtra government is taking strict action to control the spread of GBS. The government has ordered all district councils to test water sources for chemicals and bacteria.
