Rajgir, 20 November 2024: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team claimed the coveted title of the Bihar Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 with a gritty 1-0 victory over China at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium. Deepika’s decisive goal in the 31st minute ensured India successfully defended their title, marking their third Asian Champions Trophy triumph.
The final was an intensely contested affair, with both teams showcasing high-octane performances. The first quarter saw a flurry of circle entries from both sides, but neither could convert their opportunities into goals. India’s forwards probed the Chinese defense with quick passes, but the latter held firm, ensuring the quarter ended goalless.
China began the second quarter on the front foot, earning an early penalty corner. However, Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi demonstrated incredible reflexes, leaping high to deny Jinzhuang Tan’s shot. Moments later, India responded with their own penalty corner, but Deepika’s powerful drag flick was expertly saved by China’s Surong Wu. Despite trading another set of penalty corners, the teams remained locked at 0-0 by halftime.
The deadlock was broken early in the second half when India earned another penalty corner. After a mist-trap, Navneet Kaur deftly passed to Deepika, who unleashed a reverse shot that found the bottom right corner, giving India the lead. Energized by the breakthrough, India dominated possession and kept China on the back foot. Deepika had a chance to double the lead with a penalty stroke but was denied by Ting Li’s crucial save.
The final quarter saw a spirited response from China, who pushed forward with urgency. However, India’s defense, led by a disciplined backline, remained resolute. China managed a few late circle penetrations but failed to trouble Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi, who marshaled her defense impeccably. India’s relentless efforts in both attack and defense ensured they held on to their narrow lead until the final whistle.
Following the victory, Hockey India announced a reward of ₹3 lakh for each player and ₹1.5 lakh for each member of the support staff. In a historic move, the Asian Hockey Federation also declared financial rewards for the podium finishers. India received USD 10,000, while runners-up China and third-placed Japan were awarded USD 7,000 and USD 5,000, respectively.
The tournament finale was a testament to India’s skill, determination, and team spirit. Deepika’s standout performance, combined with a stellar defensive effort, sealed a memorable victory for the hosts in front of a jubilant crowd at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium.
