Patna: The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha has triggered a political storm in Bihar, with the ruling Janata Dal (United) (JDU) facing internal rebellion. The party’s senior leader and Muslim MLA, Dr. Mohammad Kasim Ansari, resigned from the party on Thursday in protest against JDU’s support for the bill.
In a letter addressed to Bihar Chief Minister and JDU chief Nitish Kumar, Ansari expressed his deep disappointment over the party’s stance on the Waqf Bill. He criticized the leadership for aligning with the NDA government’s move, which he believes is against the interests of Indian Muslims.
In his resignation letter, Ansari accused Nitish Kumar of betraying secular values, which, according to him, once defined JDU’s politics.
“Millions of Indian Muslims, including myself, once believed that you were a flagbearer of secular ideology. But now that belief has been shattered. The stand taken by JDU on the Waqf Amendment Bill has deeply hurt us all,” he wrote.
Ansari further stated that the bill violates constitutional rights and discriminates against Indian Muslims, particularly the marginalized Pasmanda community. He also took a swipe at JDU leader Lalan Singh, claiming that his statements on the bill had only worsened the situation.
“This bill is an attack on our constitutional rights. It humiliates and sidelines Indian Muslims. Unfortunately, neither you nor your party seem to understand the gravity of this decision,” Ansari added.
Ansari’s resignation has sparked speculation about further resignations within JDU. Sources indicate that several Muslim leaders within the party are unhappy with JDU’s support for the bill and may take similar steps in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar has also opposed the bill, stating that “a government that restricts namaz is now interfering in Waqf matters” and has vowed to launch a protest movement against it.
With tensions rising, Nitish Kumar’s party now finds itself caught in a political crisis, struggling to balance its alliance with the BJP-led NDA and its traditional secular vote base. The coming days could see more turbulence within the JDU as dissatisfaction over the Waqf Bill continues to grow.
