Patna’s Talent Shines on Ramleela Stage in the US

Morrisville, North Carolina: A Ramleela organised by the Hindu Society of North Carolina (HSNC) on October 24 in Morrisville, North Carolina, brought the epic tale of the Ramayana to life through a vibrant performance by members of the Indian community. Directed by writer and director Sudha Om Dhingra, the production featured two women with roots in Patna, Mayuri Raman as Mata Sita and Sampoorna Srivastava as Shurpanakha.

The cast included Pritesh Kasliwal as Ram, Saurabh Soni as Ravana, Mayank Jain as Hanuman and Rajat Chauhan as Lakshman. Viral Trivedi portrayed Kaikeyi, Usha Bajpai played Manthara and Shabari, Naveen appeared as Bharat, Avinash Deshmukh played Kevat, and Nishant Nayan portrayed the sage Ravana. Through their performances, the artists brought various episodes and characters from the Ramayana to the stage.

A 21-year-old vision becomes a major cultural event

The Ramleela traces its origins to an idea Sudha Om Dhingra conceived more than two decades ago. Recalling the beginning of the initiative, she said the idea of organising a Ramleela in Morrisville first emerged around 21 years ago. She wrote the script and discussed the concept with Saroj Sharma, who was then president of the Hindi Vikas Mandal. Sharma encouraged her to organise the production through the organisation.

Initially presented in the form of tableaux, the Ramleela gradually evolved into a major cultural event that now attracts thousands of people.

The Dhingra Family Foundation has sponsored the event for years, while several others have joined the initiative over time, expanding its reach and scale. Alongside her work as a writer and editor, Dhingra continues to take responsibility for directing the Ramleela.

Reflecting on her commitment to the production, she said the work had become a source of purpose and fulfilment in her life, adding that it sometimes felt as though God had entrusted her with this responsibility.

Keeping Indian culture alive overseas

The annual Ramleela has become an important platform for connecting the Indian diaspora in the United States with its cultural roots. It also provides younger generations with an opportunity to learn about the Ramayana, Indian traditions and the values associated with the epic.

The participation of Mayuri Raman and Sampoorna Srivastava, both associated with Patna, added a distinct Bihar connection to the cultural event, highlighting the contribution of artists from the state to Indian cultural celebrations abroad.
