Tejashwi Yadav Promises to Remove Palm Wine (Taadi) from Prohibition Law if Grand Alliance Forms Government in Bihar

As Bihar gears up for the upcoming Assembly elections, political parties are aggressively working to consolidate their vote banks. In a major move aimed at mobilizing the Pasi community, RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav made a significant announcement. Speaking at the “Taadi Vyavsayi Mahajutan” (Palm Wine Traders Gathering) held at SKM Hall in Patna, Tejashwi pledged that if the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) returns to power, palm wine (locally known as taadi) will be excluded from the stringent prohibition laws currently in place.

Tejashwi Yadav declared that the Mahagathbandhan government would not only remove taadi from the ambit of the prohibition laws but would also withdraw all ongoing legal cases against those engaged in the taadi trade. He emphasized that during his previous tenure in the government, both he and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav had repeatedly advocated for excluding taadi from the prohibition regulations. However, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s rigid stance prevented any decision from being made in favor of the palm wine industry.

Taking his promise a step further, Tejashwi announced that the taadi business would be granted the status of an industry. According to him, recognizing taadi as an industry would bring a substantial improvement in the economic conditions of the families dependent on this traditional occupation.

Drawing attention to the socio-economic status of the Pasi community, Tejashwi reminded the audience that Lalu Prasad Yadav had historically declared taadi tax-free, which had significantly boosted the livelihoods of many in the community. Referring to the 2023 Socio-Economic Caste Census, Tejashwi pointed out that 76% of Pasi families in Bihar are still landless—a stark indicator of continued social and economic marginalization.

“It is shameful that even after decades of governance, the majority of the Pasi population remains without land for farming. This exposes the hollowness of the NDA government’s claims of inclusive development,” Tejashwi asserted.

Tejashwi criticized the current NDA government for using the prohibition law as a tool of oppression, claiming that over 14.2 lakh people from backward, extremely backward, and Dalit communities have been arrested under the prohibition act, while influential individuals were spared. He argued that the prohibition law had disproportionately harmed marginalized communities, especially those like the Pasis, for whom taadi is not just a livelihood but also a cultural tradition.

Further lambasting the NDA’s track record, Tejashwi said, “Dalits have faced the maximum atrocities and exploitation during the 20 years of NDA rule in Bihar. The Nitish government declared the tax-free taadi business illegal overnight, criminalizing an entire community.”

Tejashwi promised that upon forming the government, the Mahagathbandhan would repeal the restrictions placed on taadi under the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016. He assured the gathering that the Pasi community would regain the dignity and economic opportunities stripped away from them by the current government.

“Our struggle is for justice and dignity. The Pasi community’s traditional occupation must be respected and given its rightful status. The Mahagathbandhan government will ensure that taadi is treated as a cultural and economic asset, not as a criminal act,” he added.

The event clearly reflected RJD’s strategy to woo the Pasi community, which constitutes a significant voter base in Bihar. The party appears keen to project itself as the champion of the rights and dignity of backward and marginalized communities as it prepares for a tough electoral battle ahead.

Tejashwi’s announcement is expected to intensify the political discourse in Bihar, particularly around issues of prohibition, caste-based inequalities, and economic justice. With this move, RJD aims to not only consolidate traditional vote banks but also address larger grievances related to social injustice under the NDA regime.
