The winter session of Parliament faced numerous disturbances and controversies

The winter session of Parliament, held from December 4 to December 21, faced numerous disturbances and controversies. Several noteworthy incidents occurred during this period, such as the removal of TMC MP Mahua Moitra, the entry of two young individuals into the Lok Sabha, and the suspension of many opposition MPs, causing chaos in Parliament. Additionally, there were heated discussions regarding contentious statements made by TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee, imitating Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar, and the remarks of DMK MP D.N.V. Senthil Kumar concerning cow urine.

Senthil Kumar’s statement referring to Hindi-speaking states as ‘cow urine states’ On the second day of the winter session, December 5, DMK MP Senthil Kumar made a controversial statement in the Lok Sabha. He ridiculed the BJP’s victories in three states, labeling them as ‘cow urine states,’ primarily populated by Hindi speakers. This statement triggered a lively debate, and on the following day, December 6, Senthil Kumar apologized in the Lok Sabha, acknowledging that his comments unintentionally offended some members and individuals, expressing regret for it.

Mahua Moitra’s expulsion from Parliament On December 8, the parliamentary membership of TMC MP Mahua Moitra was revoked, leading to significant uproar. The charges against Moitra were presented in the Lok Sabha through the report of the Ethics Committee. Despite Moitra’s request to address the Lok Sabha, the Speaker denied permission based on parliamentary rules. Subsequently, a proposal to revoke Mahua Moitra’s parliamentary membership was put forward and approved. This decision sparked intense protests by opposition MPs both inside and outside Parliament.

Intrusion and disturbance in Parliament December 13 witnessed a historic and alarming event in the Indian Parliament. Two intruders entered the Lok Sabha, jumping from the public gallery towards the Speaker’s podium. They were swiftly apprehended by security personnel. Concurrently, outside Parliament, another individual and a woman released colored spray, and they were also detained. The security breach incident remained a major issue throughout the winter session.

Suspension of 146 MPs On December 21, the winter session of Parliament was adjourned indefinitely due to continuous disruptions, especially related to the intrusion incident. Opposition parties demanded explanations from the Home Minister, resulting in chaotic scenes. Consequently, 146 MPs were suspended from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for the entire session.

Controversy over Vice President’s imitation During the winter session, controversy surrounded the imitation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar. On December 19, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned until noon due to uproar over the suspension of MPs. Subsequently, opposition members staged a demonstration inside the Parliament premises. In a video, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee was seen imitating Jagdeep Dhankar, eliciting laughter from other opposition MPs. Congress President Rahul Gandhi was also present, recording a video of Banerjee’s act. The incident faced criticism, with the Vice President expressing disappointment in the Rajya Sabha. President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident as a constitutional insult. The controversy surrounding this issue persists
