Transport Department’s Unique Initiative to Prevent Accidents Involving Senior Citizens

January 24, 2025

In a bid to enhance road safety and provide a safer driving environment for senior citizens, the Transport Department has launched an innovative initiative. Special stickers with the message “Keep Patience, the Driver is a Senior Citizen. Caution is Safety” will now be affixed to vehicles driven by senior citizens.

Initiative Based on Senior Citizens’ Request

The decision comes following a request from a group of senior citizens, who met Transport Secretary Mr. Sanjay Kumar Agarwal to propose the idea of special stickers for their vehicles. Responding positively, the Transport Department approved the proposal, aiming to promote safety and awareness among other drivers.

Reducing Road Accidents

Speaking about the initiative, Transport Secretary Mr. Agarwal said that senior citizens often face challenges on the road, such as unnecessary honking and overtaking by other drivers. These situations make senior drivers uncomfortable and can lead to accidents. The stickers will serve as a clear indicator for other drivers, encouraging them to drive cautiously and avoid aggressive behavior. This, in turn, is expected to reduce road accidents and ensure safer travel for senior citizens.

Rising Concerns Over Senior Citizens’ Safety on Roads

In 2023, road accidents claimed the lives of 514 individuals aged 60 and above in the state, with another 262 seniors injured. These figures include drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, underscoring the need for targeted measures to address the vulnerabilities of senior citizens on the road.

Promoting Patience and Respect

Mr. Agarwal emphasized that the stickers will not only enhance safety but also foster a sense of patience and respect for senior citizens among other road users. The initiative aims to create a more inclusive and considerate driving culture.

Implementation During Road Safety Month

The initiative is part of the state’s ongoing Road Safety Month, during which various programs are being conducted to raise awareness about road safety. The Transport Department will run a special campaign to distribute and affix the stickers on vehicles driven by senior citizens. Additionally, senior drivers can print and apply the stickers themselves as per their convenience.

Appeal to the Public

The Transport Secretary also appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary honking and drive responsibly. Many senior citizens drive at slower speeds, which may not always be apparent to other drivers. This initiative aims to bridge that gap by alerting other road users about the presence of senior citizens on the road, thus ensuring a safer driving environment for all.
