Bihar DGP Launches ‘Safe Travel Service’ for Women

Patna, September 5, 2024: Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Raj inaugurated the ‘Safe Travel Service’ for women as a new initiative under the state’s Dial 112 emergency response service. Launched as a pilot project in six districts—Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, and Nalanda—this service is designed to provide round-the-clock safety to women during their travels. The service will be extended to the entire state starting from September 15, 2024.

On September 5, 2024, at the ERSS Command and Control Center in Patna, Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Raj inaugurated the “Safe Travel Service.

With this initiative, Bihar has become the third state in India to offer a 24×7 free-of-cost service focused on ensuring the safety of women. The service was launched at the ERSS Command and Control Center in Patna, with senior police officers, including Additional Director General of Police (Technical and Communication Services) Nirmal Kumar Azad, in attendance.

During the launch, DGP Alok Raj emphasized that the ‘Safe Travel Service’ is aimed at providing women, especially those traveling for work, education, or personal reasons, with a sense of security. “This initiative will boost the confidence of women, ensuring that they can travel safely and reach their destinations with the support of Bihar Police,” he said.

How the Service Works:

  • Women can call Dial 112 anytime they feel unsafe during their travels.
  • Upon contacting 112, the police will collect basic travel details from the caller and begin digital monitoring of their journey.
  • The caller will receive a secret code, and the Dial 112 team will check in with them every 15 minutes throughout the journey to ensure their safety.
  • If the caller fails to respond or expresses concern during the journey, an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) or local police unit will be dispatched to provide immediate assistance.

DGP Alok Raj further stated that the service is entirely free and aims to ensure that women feel safe while traveling, especially during the upcoming festive season. With festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath just around the corner, the number of women traveling late into the night for shopping and celebrations is expected to increase. The Safe Travel Service will be a key measure in ensuring the safety and well-being of women during these busy times.

In addition to the six pilot districts, this service will be expanded across Bihar from September 15, 2024, allowing women throughout the state to benefit from the enhanced safety provisions. The Bihar Police’s initiative is a significant step toward creating a safer environment for women, ensuring that they can enjoy the festive season without fear.
