Rahul Gandhi’s Second Bihar Visit in 20 Days: A Strategic Move to Woo Dalit and Backward Voters

Patna, Bihar – February 5, 2025: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made his second visit to Bihar within 20 days, marking his presence at the birth anniversary celebrations of freedom fighter Jaglal Chaudhary. His participation in the event is widely seen as part of Congress’s strategy to consolidate its support among Dalits and backward-class voters in the state, particularly ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.

Rahul Gandhi arrived in Patna on Wednesday and attended the program held at S.K.M Hall, where he paid tribute to Jaglal Chaudhary. During his address, he inadvertently referred to the leader as “Jagat Chaudhary” instead of “Jaglal Chaudhary.” The audience immediately corrected him, prompting Rahul Gandhi to apologize and rectify his mistake before continuing his speech.

Who Was Jaglal Chaudhary?

Jaglal Chaudhary, a prominent freedom fighter and social reformer, was born on February 5, 1895, in Meethipur village of Garhka block in Bihar’s Saran district. He completed his early education in his village before moving to Patna, where he passed the Intermediate Science Examination (ISC) from Patna College in 1914. Later, he pursued a medical degree at Calcutta Medical College.

However, his path changed dramatically when he joined Mahatma Gandhi’s freedom movement. While in the final year of his MBBS, he left his studies in response to Gandhi’s call for independence and became an active participant in the 1921 Non-Cooperation Movement. Throughout his life, he played a vital role in the struggle against British rule and worked towards uplifting the marginalized sections of society.

Rahul Gandhi’s Speech and Call for Caste Census

During his speech at the event, Rahul Gandhi once again reiterated his demand for a caste-based census. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of deliberately avoiding a caste census.

“PM Modi, RSS, and BJP do not want to conduct a caste census. But I am committed to ensuring the rightful participation of Dalits, OBCs, and Adivasis. A caste-based census will reveal the actual demographic composition of our country. Once we have that data, we will assess the representation of Dalits, OBCs, and marginalized communities in every major institution of India,” Gandhi stated.

His remarks come amid an ongoing political debate over the need for caste enumeration. Congress has consistently advocated for caste-based data collection, arguing that it would ensure fair representation and better policymaking for disadvantaged communities.

Political Implications of Rahul Gandhi’s Bihar Visit

Rahul Gandhi’s frequent visits to Bihar indicate Congress’s renewed focus on the state, where it has struggled to regain electoral dominance in recent years. The party is eyeing a larger share of the vote bank, particularly among Dalits and backward classes, which constitute a significant portion of Bihar’s electorate.

The Congress leader’s participation in the event was also a strategic move to align with the legacy of Jaglal Chaudhary, a revered figure among Dalits and backward communities in Bihar. By honoring his contributions, the party aims to reinforce its pro-social justice stance and appeal to voters seeking stronger representation.

With Bihar heading toward Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi’s emphasis on caste census and social justice issues is expected to be a key component of Congress’s campaign strategy. His visit and speech at the event highlight the party’s efforts to strengthen its base and challenge the BJP-led government at both state and central levels.

As the political landscape in Bihar heats up, it remains to be seen how voters respond to Congress’s renewed outreach and whether Rahul Gandhi’s calls for a caste-based census will gain traction among the electorate.
