Boring Road’s S.K. Puri Park recently became a hub of creativity and tradition with a unique Block Printing Workshop organized by the Dyeing Printing Gang (Rangaayee Chhapaayee Giroh). This vibrant event, focused on the intricate craft of block printing, featuring the production of beautifully designed aprons.
A Day of Craft and Creativity
The workshop, hosted by Bandhni, a renowned organization established in 1993 and spearheaded by Dr. Sunita Prakash, a state awardee, aimed to promote traditional block printing techniques and inspire the next generation of artisans. Approximately 25 skilled block printers participated, demonstrating their expertise and passion for the craft. The event was not only a showcase of talent but also an educational experience for the attendees.
Inspiring the Youth
Dr. Sunita Prakash emphasized the importance of encouraging young printers to explore and excel in traditional crafts. “This program is organized to inspire and support young printers, preserving the rich heritage of block printing,” she stated. The initiative began during the COVID-19 pandemic when masks were crafted using block printing techniques. The success of that initial endeavor led to the creation of various other items, including folders and jholas (bags).
A Special Guest Appearance
The event was graced by the presence of Mrs. Punam, a retired Project Manager from the Department of Industries. Her attendance added a layer of significance to the workshop, highlighting the support and recognition from the industry for such cultural initiatives. Mrs. Punam’s insights and encouragement were invaluable, particularly for the young artisans and attendees.
Community Engagement and Participation

Participants had the opportunity to learn about the history and techniques of block printing, try their hand at creating their own designs, and engage with experienced printers. The interactive nature of the workshop made it a memorable experience for everyone involved.
Hands-On Learning
The hands-on approach of the workshop allowed participants to dive deep into the process of block printing. They learned how to carve intricate designs onto wooden blocks, mix dyes, and apply the prints onto fabric. The focus product of the day, aprons, became canvases for their creativity. The workshop not only provided practical skills but also instilled a sense of accomplishment and appreciation for traditional art forms.
Encouraging Future Artisans
The event organizers and participants alike were enthusiastic about the potential for future workshops and programs. By fostering a supportive environment for young printers, Bandhni aims to ensure that the art of block printing continues to thrive. The positive response from the community and the active participation of both new and experienced printers indicate a bright future for this traditional craft.
