Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station Claims 18 Lives, mostly from Bihar

New Delhi, February 16: A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night led to the deaths of 18 people, including 14 women and three children, while more than 12 others sustained injuries. The incident occurred as a massive crowd gathered to board a train bound for Prayagraj, triggering chaos at the overcrowded platform.

The Incident

The stampede took place around 10 PM on platforms 13 and 14, where thousands of devotees had arrived to board a train to Prayagraj for the Mahakumbh pilgrimage. The rush intensified as passengers struggled to enter the train, leading to a deadly crush. Most of the victims were women and children, caught in the middle of the panic.

Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd grew uncontrollable as people rushed towards the train’s doors, pushing and shoving each other. With a lack of proper crowd management, the situation spiraled out of control, resulting in the tragic loss of lives.

Indian Railways has announced an ex-gratia compensation for the victims’ families. Railway Board’s Executive Director for Information and Publicity, Dilip Kumar, confirmed that compensation has already started reaching the affected families.

Several passengers who survived the stampede recounted the horror of the night. Rajesh Kumar, a witness, described the scene: “There were too many people, all trying to board the train at once. Suddenly, people started falling, and there was no way to stop it.”

Another survivor, Seema Devi, said, “I was with my sister, and she got separated from me in the chaos. I tried to reach out to her, but the crowd kept pushing me forward. I later found out she didn’t survive.”

The incident has sparked renewed calls for better safety measures at railway stations. Experts suggest implementing controlled entry points, real-time crowd monitoring, and better police presence to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Opposition leaders have also criticized the railway authorities for their failure to anticipate and manage the crowd surge. They have demanded strict accountability and an overhaul of railway safety procedures.
