His demise has sent a wave of grief across Bihar’s political, business, journalistic and social circles. Known for his contributions to journalism, politics, entrepreneurship and social service, Sinha was among the early leaders associated with the formation and growth of the BJP. He was also the founder and chairman of the Security and Intelligence Services (SIS) Group, which he transformed from a modest venture in Patna into one of India’s leading private security service organisations.

According to family sources, his mortal remains will be brought from Delhi to Patna, where people will have the opportunity to pay their last respects at Annapurna Bhawan in the Patliputra locality. The detailed schedule of the final rites is awaited. NDTV Profit+1

From journalism to public life

Born on September 22, 1951, in Bahiyara village of Bihar’s Bhojpur region, R.K. Sinha spent his formative years in Patna, where he received his early education. A graduate in Political Science and Law, he developed an early interest in journalism, public affairs and social movements.

He began his professional career as a journalist and worked with the Patna-based English daily The Searchlight. His journalistic career took him to the forefront of important national developments. Notably, he covered the 1971 India-Pakistan war as a war correspondent, an experience that shaped his understanding of national affairs and public service.

Sinha was deeply influenced by the ideas and movement of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan. During the 1974 student movement, he became actively associated with the political mobilisation for social and democratic reforms. During the Emergency, he also extended support to leaders associated with the democratic movement and their families.

His engagement with the JP movement was reflected in his book Jan Andolan, which documented the student movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan between 1970 and 1975.

Built SIS Group from a small garage in Patna

One of the most remarkable chapters of R.K. Sinha’s life was his entrepreneurial journey. In 1974, he founded Security and Intelligence Services (SIS) Group in Patna, starting from a small garage with a vision of providing employment opportunities to ex-servicemen returning to civilian life after the 1971 war.

He recognised the experience, discipline and professional skills of retired defence personnel and sought to create meaningful employment opportunities for them in the private security sector.

What began as a modest enterprise gradually developed into a major organisation providing security, manpower, facilities management and other business support services. Under his leadership, SIS expanded its operations across India and international markets, including Australia.

The organisation emerged as one of India’s leading private security companies, generating employment for thousands of people. His contribution to the rehabilitation and employment of ex-servicemen remained an important aspect of his entrepreneurial journey.

A founding member of the BJP and former Rajya Sabha MP

Sinha was associated with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh before the formation of the BJP in 1980 and became one of the early members of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Over the decades, he played an active role in the party’s organisational activities, particularly in Bihar.

In recognition of his political experience and organisational contributions, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar in 2014 as a BJP candidate. He served as a Member of Parliament in the Upper House from April 10, 2014, to April 9, 2020. He was also associated with the BJP’s national executive committee.

During his parliamentary tenure, Sinha raised several issues concerning public welfare, including women’s safety, cleanliness of the Ganga, skill development, environmental protection and Bihar’s development. He also participated in parliamentary debates on matters of national and regional importance.

Contribution to journalism and social service

Despite his success in business and politics, Sinha maintained his association with journalism and public communication. He served as chairman of Hindusthan Samachar, the multilingual news agency, from 2016 to 2022.

His association with the media reflected his continued interest in journalism, public discourse and the dissemination of information.

He was also involved in various social and community initiatives. His efforts towards employment generation, particularly for former servicemen, and his engagement with public welfare activities remained significant aspects of his public life.

Leaders express grief

The news of Sinha’s demise prompted condolences from political leaders and prominent personalities across the country.

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed deep sorrow, recalling his contributions to journalism, social service and organisational work. He described his passing as an irreparable loss to the political and social spheres.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also remembered Sinha’s entrepreneurial journey and his contribution to strengthening the BJP. Several other senior BJP leaders, including Ravi Shankar Prasad and Smriti Irani, expressed their condolences.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) also paid tribute to the former MP, recalling his contributions to the private security industry, nation-building, social work and journalism.

A legacy spanning journalism, politics and entrepreneurship

R.K. Sinha’s life represented an unusual journey from journalism to politics and from entrepreneurship to social service. From covering the 1971 war as a young journalist to documenting the JP movement, participating in the early years of the BJP and building a major private security enterprise, he made his mark in several fields.

With his passing, Bihar has lost a prominent personality whose contributions to industry, politics, journalism and employment generation will remain an important part of the state’s contemporary history
