BPSC Aspirants Protest Against Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Demand Cancellation of 70th Prelims Exam

Patna, Bihar: Protests erupted in Patna on Thursday as Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) aspirants staged demonstrations against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, demanding the cancellation and re-examination of the 70th BPSC preliminary exam. The situation escalated when hundreds of protestors surrounded the BPSC office, leading to law and order disruptions in several areas of the city.

Mass Protest and Police Action

The protestors, dissatisfied with the conduct of the 70th BPSC preliminary examination, gathered in large numbers near the BPSC office in Patna. They alleged irregularities in the examination process and demanded that the government cancel the exam and hold it again under stricter supervision.

According to police reports, around 350 protestors participated in the demonstration, which started from Nehru Path and later extended to Income Tax Golambar, Lohia Path Chakra, and Veerchand Patel Path, disrupting traffic in these areas. The protestors reportedly blocked roads and clashed with security personnel, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

In response, the Patna district administration took strict action. Thirty protestors were taken into custody, and an FIR was registered against 350 individuals for disturbing public order. Authorities confirmed that 26 of the detained individuals were from outside Patna.

Allegations of External Influence and Social Media Mobilization

The district administration’s preliminary investigation suggested that the protests were not entirely organic. Officials revealed that two coaching center operators, along with several unidentified individuals, used social media platforms, particularly Telegram, to mobilize protestors. A QR code was allegedly circulated via social media, encouraging aspirants and others to join the demonstration.

Patna District Magistrate (DM) stated that a significant portion of the protestors were brought in from outside the state capital, and some were suspected to be from other states as well. The DM further claimed that security forces had repeatedly requested the protestors to clear the area, but they refused to comply, leading to confrontations.

Clashes with Security Forces and Traffic Disruptions

As the protest intensified, instances of violence were reported. Protestors allegedly engaged in scuffles with police personnel, leading to further chaos. At one point, a police officer was pushed to the ground by agitators, prompting security forces to take stronger action.

The demonstrations caused widespread traffic congestion, particularly in central Patna, affecting daily commuters and essential services. The police struggled to control the swelling crowd as demonstrators continued their march towards the BPSC office.

Legal Consequences and Administrative Response

Following the protest, the Patna Secretariat Police Station lodged an FIR against 350 demonstrators, citing charges of unlawful assembly, rioting, and obstruction of government work.

The detained individuals are currently being interrogated to ascertain their affiliations and motives. Authorities are also verifying whether those detained were genuine BPSC aspirants or outsiders instigated by coaching centers or other organizations.

Upcoming Court Hearing on Exam Cancellation

Amidst the ongoing unrest, the Patna High Court is scheduled to hear a petition on Friday, seeking the cancellation of the December 13 BPSC preliminary examination. The petition, filed by several aspirants, alleges that the examination was conducted in a flawed manner and demands a fresh examination under stringent measures.

The outcome of the court proceedings is likely to have a significant impact on the protestors’ demands and the state’s administrative response.

The BPSC aspirants’ protest in Patna has once again highlighted concerns over the fairness and transparency of competitive examinations in Bihar. While the authorities insist that necessary steps have been taken to maintain law and order, the growing dissatisfaction among aspirants poses a challenge to the credibility of the examination system.
