Deadly Terror Attack in Pahalgam Claims 28 Lives, Sparks National Outrage
Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir – April 22, 2025: In a devastating escalation of violence, a terror attack in the scenic Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam resulted in the deaths of at least 28 tourists and injuries to several others. The attack, which occurred around 1:00 PM IST, was carried out by four militants who opened fire on a group of tourists enjoying the meadow.

The assailants, identified as members of The Resistance Front (TRF), a group linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, targeted the tourists without warning. The victims included Indian nationals from Karnataka, Odisha, and Gujarat, as well as two foreign nationals. The attackers escaped into the surrounding forest, prompting a massive manhunt by security forces.
Government Response:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on an official visit abroad, condemned the attack and assured that those responsible would be brought to justice. Union Home Minister Amit Shah traveled to Srinagar to oversee the security response and coordinate with local authorities. A helpline has been established to assist affected tourists and their families.
International Condemnation:
The attack drew widespread international condemnation. U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who was visiting India at the time, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Leaders from various countries, including President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, condemned the attack and extended condolences to the victims’ families.

This incident marks the deadliest civilian attack in the Kashmir Valley since the revocation of the region’s special status in 2019. The TRF claimed responsibility, citing opposition to the settlement of over 85,000 non-local residents in the region, which they allege is altering the demographic balance.
